Ted Lasso on AppleTV

It’s hard not to feel moved after watching the TV series Ted Lasso.

In this blog post, we’ll analyse Ted’s unique leadership style and optimistic approach to life, highlighting key takeaways that can inspire us to navigate challenges with a positive mindset.

By adopting his cheerful demeanour and resilience, we can lead our lives towards personal fulfilment and success.

The power of positivity:

Ted Lasso’s unwavering optimism, even in difficult situations, shows the transformative power of a positive mindset. His ability to remain hopeful and encouraging, no matter the circumstances, creates an uplifting environment and builds stronger relationships.

One memorable moment is when he hangs a “Believe” sign above the locker room door, encouraging his team to believe in themselves despite their struggles. Even after a critical loss, Ted chooses to celebrate the team’s personal growth and progress rather than focusing on the score. This attitude keeps morale high and shifts the team’s mindset from dwelling on failures to focusing on their potential. Cultivating a positive attitude helps overcome setbacks, inspires others, and keeps you focused on long-term goals.

It’s like that meme of two kids on a winner’s podium: the child in the third spot is overjoyed while the one in first place is miserable. Happiness is, indeed, a choice.

The impact of smiling:

Ted Lasso’s infectious smile and frequent use of humour are key to his leadership style.

A smile can diffuse tension, foster connection, and spread positivity in an instant. Smiling, though simple, has significant benefits for both physical and mental health.

Studies show that smiling triggers the release of dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin — neurotransmitters that reduce anxiety and increase feelings of happiness. Serotonin, in particular, is the same chemical balanced by many antidepressant medications.

This natural boost in happiness can also lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, and even reduce pain. Beyond personal benefits, a smile has a contagious ripple effect, lifting the mood of everyone in a room.

It’s a small gesture that can change not just your day, but someone else’s too. As someone who doesn’t smile much, this is something I’m working on more often as well.

Resilience in the face of adversity:

No matter the obstacles — whether it’s scepticism from others or personal challenges — Ted Lasso remains resilient. Moving to the UK to coach football with no prior experience, Ted dives into the unknown and transforms a doubtful team by focusing on relationships, positivity, and perseverance.

In his personal life, Ted also faces adversity, including a painful separation and anxiety attacks. Yet, he continues to push forward, confronting his struggles without letting them define him.

Eventually, Ted accepts help from Dr. Sharon, the team psychologist, showing that resilience is not only about persistence but also about knowing when to ask for help. His story highlights that setbacks are learning opportunities, and strength lies in admitting when we need support.

The practice of gratitude:

Gratitude is woven into Ted Lasso’s character.

He regularly expresses appreciation for his team and those around him, helping to build trust and loyalty. Ted’s practice of gratitude not only strengthens his relationships but also enhances his own mental well-being.

By focusing on the positives, even in tough times, he fosters a culture of empathy and support.

This reminds us that gratitude can shift our perspective, making us more content and present in daily life.

However, even Ted isn’t immune to dark times. Beneath his cheerfulness and gratitude, he struggles with personal challenges that eventually catch up with him.

At first, Ted is reluctant to seek help but finally reaches out to Dr. Sharon during a vulnerable moment, showing that even the most positive people need support.

This moment serves as a reminder that kindness extends not only to others but also to ourselves, and asking for help is an act of self-compassion.

Leading by example and believing:

Ted Lasso leads by example through self-confidence and authenticity. His quirky anecdotes and oddball humour, initially met with scepticism, eventually win people over and become his leadership superpower. Ted embraces his quirks, which encourages others to believe in themselves and their abilities.

A classic example of Ted’s leadership is when he tells his team to “be a goldfish” because it has a 10-second memory.

Initially confusing, this advice helps his players learn to let go of mistakes quickly and focus on the next opportunity. Ted’s unwavering moral compass and his ability to bring out the best in others remind us that true leadership is about doing the right thing, even when it’s difficult.

His leadership encourages us to accept others for who they are, see the good in them, and focus on growth, both personally and as a team.
